Freshwater Issues

Cloudy Water

Symptoms
  • White or milky haze throughout the water column
  • Visibility drops within a day or two of setup or maintenance
  • Sometimes a faint earthy or musty smell
Likely causes
  • Bacterial bloom from an immature or recently disturbed nitrogen cycle
  • Fine substrate dust that was not rinsed before going in the tank
  • Overfeeding or decaying food and plant matter feeding bacteria
  • Sudden organic load from too many new fish at once
Immediate steps to take
  1. Stop feeding for 48 hours — fish will not starve and the bloom needs no fuel
  2. Test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate; address any reading above zero ammonia/nitrite
  3. Do a gentle 25% water change with dechlorinated, temperature-matched water
  4. Make sure filtration is running at full flow and media is not clogged
Long-term prevention
  • Always cycle a new tank fully before adding livestock
  • Add fish in small groups over weeks, not all at once
  • Rinse new substrate until the water runs clear
  • Feed only what fish can finish in two minutes
Recommended products & practices

Patience is the real cure. Add a quality bacterial starter, run mechanical floss to polish water, and let the bloom finish — most clear within 3 to 7 days on their own.
